I have a large percentage of my “fun money” in a company called Teladoc, which I’ve mentioned before. The stock’s been getting crushed again lately, but nothing like its original collapse. It went from $300 to $6.35 over the years, mostly due to bad management, overpriced acquisitions, and no real vision for how to make money or disrupt the industry.
I bought near the bottom because the financials showed they were generating $2.5 billion in revenue, only slightly unprofitable, and trading at a market cap that’s just 50 percent of annual sales. That market cap tells you one thing: nobody believes in management.
The stock did bounce when new leadership came in, but they left Mela Murthy on board, and she needs to go. Leadership is two things: having a vision and executing it. The bonus is being able to tell that story well to investors. She is none of those. When she speaks on earnings calls, she drags the entire tone down. Last week, she used the word “headwind” at least a dozen times. She sounded more skeptical than the investors listening. Then Chuck, the CEO, came on and delivered the same data, but in a way that actually gave some hope. He acknowledged the challenges while laying out where the opportunities are.
My guess is Mala carries that same aura in her daily work. And as CFO, she never talks about cost controls. That is half the job. If she simply said the company was working on reducing costs, the stock might double. Instead, she throws out vague lines like “we need to bring customer acquisition costs down.” No kidding. The point is how you plan to do it.
I still believe Teladoc has a real future if they can get the story straight and make better use of their assets. They need to stop trying to look like a traditional health company and lean into the consumer side more, beyond just BetterHelp. Make it easier and better than going to the doctor. The product already is. Now tell that story. The government has already cleared the way by allowing it to be pre-deductible.
And get rid of Mala.
This is going to take a few years, but I think there is a shot at a 5X return here. Or I lose half my money. I will take those odds.
